Franklin, Mitchell named Mustang Athletes of the Week

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Athletics Department has announced its weekly award winners, naming sophomore Shay Franklin (North Norwich, N.Y.) and freshman Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23.

Franklin led the women's soccer team to a 2-0 week within conference play as they posted wins over Cazenovia College and Wells College.

In the contest on their home turf Saturday, Franklin broke free from her normal defensive position to the forward line and posted two goals, the first a one-timer in the seventh minute of action which proved to be the eventual game winner.

She followed with a second tally in the 68th minute of action, putting the game out of reach and giving the Mustangs the conference win. Her two scores in a single game were a collegiate high for the sophomore, who to date, has notched four total tallies.

Franklin is a graduate of Sherburne-Earlville High and is majoring in applied psychology at SUNY Morrisville. She is the daughter of Denise and Jay Franklin.

Mitchell earns athlete of the week honors after a break-through performance at linebacker in Friday night's non-conference win over visiting St. Lawrence University.

In the contest, the freshman made a total of four stops, including two solo tackles, but most notably two big defensive plays for the Mustangs in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win and boost the team to a 2-1 record entering conference play.

On the Saint's first play of the final drive of the fourth quarter, Mitchell came around the corner to drop the quarterback 10 yards after they began the drive at midfield. He followed four plays later with a quarterback hurry, forcing the rushed pass attempt and resulting incompletion.

The freshman is a graduate of Half Hollows Hills East and is majoring in criminal justice at SUNY Morrisville. He is the son of Tonya and Rogelio Mitchell of Wheatley Heights.
