Morrisville State western team heads into break with December show sweep  

 

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State western equestrian riding team headed into the schedule and semester break with a show sweep Saturday, as they topped all competition in team points to earn high point team honors in each of the morning and afternoon shows.

THE BASICS:

  • Team Scores (AM): Morrisville 35, Cobleskill 17, Colgate University 13
  • Team Scores (PM): Morrisville 30, Cobleskill 26, Colgate University 9
  • Location: Swamp Road Riding Arena, Morrisville, N.Y.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Mikaela Cormier (Belchertown, Mass.) earned high point rider honors for each of the morning and afternoon shows, taking home the blue ribbons in the reining and open western horsemanship classes in the morning show, before capturing her second straight win in open western horsemanship in the afternoon. She also placed second in reining in the afternoon show as well.
  • Morrisville State swept competition in the novice classes for both shows, with rider Kathryn Hayden earning a double win, along with Katelyn Bonarrigo (Raynham, Mass.).
  • Elyse Scott (Averill Park, N.Y.) had the blue ribbon ride in the advanced western horsemanship class, pointing up to novice for the afternoon, where she took home her second win of the day in her first showing at novice.
  • Abigail Schul (Lewiston, N.Y.) collected a win in the intermediate II class for the Mustangs in the morning show, along with Samantha Rogers (Oakdale, Conn.) in the afternoon.
  • Danielle Utterback (Weedsport, N.Y.) topped all riders in the intermediate I class for the Mustangs, with fellow rider Kelli Castaldo (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) capturing the win in the afternoon.
  • Caitlin Campbell completed all top rides for the Mustangs with the win in the beginner western horsemanship class in the morning show.
  • Five additional riders qualified for the Regional Championships on February 23rd from the show, including Cormier in reining and open horsemanship; Scott and Ashley Newcomb (Syracuse, N.Y.) in novice horsemanship, Rogers and Sienna Gussler (Carlisle, Pa.) in intermediate horsemanship and Andrea Lamanque in the Alumni division.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Following the semester break, Morrisville State will return to the competition riding arena Sunday, February 17, hosting a double show before the Regional Championships.
