Morrisville State hunt seat team opens season with fifth place finish at Hartwick IHSA Show

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College hunt seat equestrian team opened the 2015-16 season Saturday on the road at Hartwick College, finishing fifth overall in team standings at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) event in Oneonta.

Skidmore College claimed show champion honors behind its 47 point team performance, followed by Hartwick College as reserve show champion with 37 points. Colgate and SUNY Cobleskill tied for third with 33.

Morrisville State had four riders take home the top spot in their respective classes, including Sarah Simmons (East Northport, N.Y.) who claimed the blue ribbon in the novice over fences and novice flat class. After the ride-off, Simmons finished third.

Abby VanWinkle (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Taylor Jurek (Perry, N.Y.) each registered the winning ride in the advanced walk trot canter class, while teammate Ashley Pigg (Syracuse, N.Y.) topped the field in the walk trot class.

The Mustangs also had two second place rides in Anastasia Slepecki (Walworth, N.Y.) in the intermediate equitation over fences class, and Kailyn Guthro (Mannsville, N.Y.) in the walk trot class.

Morrisville State will return to the riding arena Saturday and Sunday, hosting two shows across the weekend in their home arena located on Fearon Road.
