Hunt Seat Team opens season with reserve honors

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College hunt seat equestrian team opened the 2016-17 season Saturday on the road at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) outing hosted by Hartwick College, and collected Reserve High Point Team accolades behind 13 top three performances across the classes.

Defending champion Skidmore College was high point team for the show, compiling 45 team points, while Morrisville State recorded 36 to edge SUNY Cobleskill for reserve honors. Cobleskill had 34 points in team standings.

Morgan Wilsberg (Mattituck, N.Y.) kicked off the day with the top ride in open equitation over fences to claim the blue ribbon, followed by a second place finish in open equitation on the flat.

In the intermediate equitation over fences class, Morrisville State had three claim top three performances, including Megan Hunsinger (Cato, N.Y.) who collected the win. Anastasia Slepecki (Walworth, N.Y.) and Michaela Best (Fulton, N.Y.) each placed third.

Marcus Livermore (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Sarah Simmons (East Northport, N.Y.) each rode to second place finishes in the novice equitation over fences class, with Simmons also finishing third in the novice equitation on the flat along with teammate Phoebe Leger (New Paltz, N.Y.). Fellow novice rider Taylor Jurek (Perry, N.Y.) placed second in the equitation on the flat.

Ben Callahan (Methuen, Mass.) claimed the blue ribbon for his top ride in the advanced walk trot canter class, with teammate Abigail VanWinkle (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) placing third.

Brittney Dorman (Granville, N.Y.) finished third for Morrisville State in the walk trot class to round out top three performances for the Mustangs on the day.

Morrisville State travels to Skidmore College Saturday, before returning home the following weekend to their own riding arena, as they host shows Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6.
