Nathanel honored by Empire 8 as Defensive Player of the Week

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Empire 8 Conference office has announced its weekly award winners for action ending Sunday, Oct. 28, naming Morrisville State sophomore Sadeeq Nathanel (Bronx, N.Y.) the Defensive Player of the Week.

Nathanel collected a total three stops in Saturday's 38-14 win over Buffalo State in Empire 8 play, also adding a total two interceptions and two pass breakups to his tallies.

In the first quarter, the sophomore stepped in front of the Bengal pass to collect the interception, leading to a Mustang score, and on the ensuing Buffalo State possession, collected his second interception of the quarter and contest, returning the ball 52 yards for the defensive touchdown.

Nathanel has recorded four total interceptions to date on the season, all within the last three conference games, logging a total 80 interception return yards. He has also registered four total pass breakups. He currently leads the Empire 8 in interceptions with four, averaging 0.50 per game.

The freshman is a graduate of Harry S. Truman High and is majoring in applied psychology at SUNY Morrisville. He is the son of Gloria Smith and Stanley Nathanel of the Bronx.
