Morrisville Field Hockey Drops High Scoring Affair at Castleton

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – After being shut out in their opener at #5 William Smith, the Mustang field hockey team rebounded well offensively scoring 5 goals, but it was not enough as they fell to Castleton on the road 8-5.

Castleton got on the board early against the Mustangs, finding the back of the cage just under four minutes into the game.  Castleton picked up another just seven minutes later.

Morrisville cut the lead in half when Allyson Flurer (Kunkletown, Pa.) picked up an unassisted goal in the 19th minute of play.

The Spartans rebounded quickly, extending their lead to 3-1 just over a minute later.  However, junior Lauren Kellum (Morrisville, N.Y.) got the Mustangs within striking distance in the 23rd minute of play, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Spartans.  Freshman Giovanna Lisi (Marathon, N.Y.) evened up the score five minutes later with her first collegiate goal.  Nicole Griener (Eden, N.Y.) assisted on the play.

The score remained knotted at 3 goals apiece for the first ten minutes of the second half until the Spartans scored four goals in the next twenty minutes of play.

The Mustangs, who started four freshmen and played three more throughout the game showed their resilience when they scored twice in the last five minutes of action.  Both goals were scored by Lisi with the first of which was assisted by fellow freshman, Emily Hunt (Harpursville, N.Y.), while the second was assisted by Kellum.

Unfortunately the last minute stand was not enough as Castleton snuck in their 8th goal of the game in the 67th minute of play.  After all was said and done, Castleton remained on top and the game ended 8-5 in favor of the Spartans.

After two tough road losses, the Mustangs will look to rebound when they make their home debut on Wednesday, September 7 at 4:00 PM against St. Lawrence on Drake Field.
