Field Hockey Falls 3-2 vs St. Lawrence in Home Opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team dropped their first home game of 2016 this afternoon by a score of 3-2 against visiting St. Lawrence University.

After giving up 8 goals in their last game, the Mustangs stepped up their defensive effort, keeping the visiting Saints scoreless until the 27th minute of play.  Alex Clark took a cross from the right and shot back across the circle to give St. Lawrence the 1-0 lead.  Just over two minutes later, the Saints found the back of the cage again when Bailey Sherwin notched her third goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

Morrisville responded in the second half when Lauren Kellum (Morrisville, N.Y.) scored off of a penalty corner, cutting the St. Lawrence lead in half.  The junior received the insert at the top of the circle, took a few dribbles to clear some room and blasted a one-timer past the Saints' goalie.

St. Lawrence responded two minutes later when Lucy Stillman tapped in an aerial pass from Carly Dziekan, giving the Saints a two goal lead.

The Mustangs, particularly Kellum, would not go quietly as she found the back of the cage again late in the 49th minute.  Once again, Morrisville set up in a penalty corner, but this time Kellum received the ball after the first pass and shredded the Saints defense on a dribble drive and a shot to the right corner of the cage.

Unfortunately, that would be the final offensive effort for the Mustangs.  Time ran out and the 3-2 score stood in favor of the Saints.

Morrisville will hit the road again on Sunday, September 11 as they travel to New England College for a 12:00 PM start time.  Last season, the New England College game was the first win of the season for the Mustangs and the first career victory for Coach Allison Beardsley.
