MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team suffered a tough 3-1 loss on Tuesday night under the lights at Drake Field against the Dutchwomen from Union College.
Union got on the board first in the 14th minute of play when Charlotte Leyland took Rachel Andreana's sideline pass and deposited it into the left corner of the cage. Union also posted the second goal of the game in the 23rd minute. Sephanie Resnick drove into the Mustangs' defense and slipped a pass left to Angelina Stewart for the score and a 2-0 lead at the end of the half.
Morrisville circled the wagons in the second half, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the 41st minute. Meghan Holcomb (Hamilton, N.Y.) drove into the right side of the circle and dumped a pass back and to her left to the waiting stick of Lauren Kellum (Morrisville, N.Y.). Kellum then blasted a shot through the Union defense and past the Dutchwomen's keeper.
Despite picking up 8 penalty corners in the second half, the Mustangs were unable to punch another goal in and were ultimately outdone when Union added an insurance goal in the 51st minute of action. The score would end 3-1 in favor of the Dutchwomen.
Morrisville will turn their attention to conference play as they compete in their first SUNYAC home contest of the season on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons from Cortland State will come to Drake Field for a 4:00 PM match up.
