Cortland squeaks by Morrisville State field hockey, 1-0 in SUNYAC action

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host Morrisville State College field hockey made a statement Friday afternoon as they put up a huge defensive effort against visiting SUNY Cortland, holding the Red Dragons to a thrilling 1-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) decision on Drake Field in Morrisville.

The loss drops Morrisville State to 1-7 on the season, 0-2 in conference play, while Cortland ups their overall record to 5-2, 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

Morrisville State's defensive unit was able to hold the Red Dragons scoreless until the 31st minute of the contest before Cortland was able to break through the tough stance. Forward Jessica Welsh rifled the corner feed from Gabby Stein at the top of the circle into the right corner of the goal for the 1-0 visitor lead.

Cortland threatened to extend their lead to two, minutes later, but Morrisville State goalkeeper Meredith Koziol (Waterford, N.Y.) turned the Red Dragons away for her 10th save of the half, sending the game into the halftime break with a one goal visitor advantage.

In the second, Morrisville State's defense again gave the visitors a difficult time as Cortland struggled to find the back of the cage firing off a total seven shots on goal for the half, all of which Koziol turned away.

The Mustangs threatened to even the contest at one in the 52nd minute, but the shot on goal was stopped short by a Cortland defender to keep the hosts off the board.

Koziol finished the contest with a collegiate best 16 saves for Morrisville State.

The Mustangs return to the field tomorrow, hosting Wells College at 5 p.m. on Drake Field.
