Lisi’s Overtime Goal Lifts Mustangs Past Phoenix in OT

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team picked up an overtime win on Sunday afternoon, dropping the Wilson College Phoenix, 1-0.

The Mustangs outshot the Phoenix in the first half of action 5-0, but only one shot was on goal.  Wilson's keeper, Kayla Butts was up to the task, making the save.

The hosts picked up their offense in the second half as both teams were able to get five shots off, but once again Butts denied every Mustang opportunity.  On the flip side, Morrisville's Meredith Koziol (Waterford, N.Y.) also denied every Phoenix shot on goal.

With the score tied 0-0 after regulation, the game headed into overtime.  Both teams dropped four players from the field per NCAA regulations and went to work.

The Mustangs had the first opportunity with a penalty corner just over two minutes into the extra time, but Lauren Kellum's (Morrisville, N.Y.) shot went just wide of the cage.  Four minutes later, Morrisville gained the advantage on another penalty corner but were unable to get a shot off.

The Phoenix tested the Morrisville defense late in the 78th minute as they gained a penalty corner of their own.  However, the Mustangs were up to the challenge, breaking up the insert pass.

The Morrisville defense looked down field, getting a pass off to Kellum.  Giovanna Lisi (Marathon, N.Y.) also broke free for the Mustangs and on a dead sprint, Kellum chipped the ball ahead to Lisi who took a shot.  Butts made the save for Wilson, but Lisi stuck with the play and deposited the deflection into the back of the cage for the 1-0 sudden victory win.

The Mustangs will wrap up their season at home on Wednesday, October 26 at 5 PM against Nazareth.
