Mustangs End 2016 on High Note, Beat Nazareth 1-0 in OT

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team ended their 2016 campaign on a high note, defeating the visiting Nazareth College Golden Flyers 1-0 in overtime.

The Mustangs outshot the visitors in the first half 8-5.  Both teams equaled each other's shot effort 9-9 in the second, but neither team could score.  Kimber Nourse for the Golden Flyers and Meredith Koziol (Waterford, N.Y.) both came up big in cage for their teams, recording 9 and 4 saves respectively on the day.

With the score tied 0-0 after regulation, the game headed into overtime.  After defeating Wilson in overtime on Sunday, the Mustangs went right to work gaining a quick advantage in shots.

Morrisville gained an advantage, drawing a penalty corner early in the 73rd minute.  Holly Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) received the insert from Emily Hunt (Harpursville, N.Y.) and immediately slid a pass to her right, finding the stick of Lauren Kellum (Morrisville, N.Y.).  Kellum ripped a shot, but could not convert.

The play eventually resulted in a foul by Nazareth and another corner for the Mustangs.  After seeing the defense, Hunt inserted the ball to Gamlen who found Kellum once again for the open look.  Kellum got the shot off, but Nourse came up with the save.

However, it was the aggressive offensive push for the Mustangs that put them over the top.  Allyson Flurer (Kunkletown, Pa.) crashed hard to the cage and slipped a pass off of the deflection to the left corner for Hunt, who found the back of the cage for the game winner.

The Mustangs will look to build on their solid 2016 finish as they head into the off-season and eventually into the 2017 season.
