MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College field hockey team picked up a good win Sunday afternoon, handing visiting Elmira College a 3-1 loss behind a four point outing by senior midfielder Lauren Kellum (Eaton, N.Y.).

The win pulls the Mustangs even at 1-1.

Midway through the first half, Morrisville State got a break when the defensive unit created a turnover and fed the ball forward to Kellum who carried it into the offensive zone. Kellum then crossed the ball into the circle from the right and connected with the stick of fellow senior Elizabeth Leva (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) for the diving score on the left post.

Elmira responded at the 29:34 mark with an unassisted score from Alison Mariano, who carried the ball into the left side of the circle and flicked it past Mustang goalkeeper Emma Gottung (Caroga Lake, N.Y.) for the evening tally.

Morrisville State quickly regained momentum early on in the second half, and regained the lead as Kellum once again crossed the ball in front of cage to an approaching Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.) for the scoring deflection, the first collegiate score for the freshman.

Kellum sealed the win with her own tally at the 48:32 mark, driving the ball from the top of the circle on the penalty corner feed from Meghan Holcomb (Hamilton, N.Y.) for the 3-1 Morrisville State advantage.

Gottung secured the win for the Mustangs down the stretch, turning away two Elmira attempts to get back in the game, for a total five stops on the day.

Tina O'Donnell posted seven saves in the loss for the Soaring Eagles.

Morrisville State returns to the field Wednesday, September 6, traveling to St. Lawrence University for a 5 p.m. start.
