MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team struggled to find any offensive momentum on Wednesday evening in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener against the Hawks from New Paltz, falling 5-0.
Despite facing 14 shots in the opening half, the Mustangs were able to hold the Hawks to just one goal. Samantha Ackerman opened the scoring from New Paltz at the 22:36 mark after she was able to push a shot into the right corner of the cage after a scrum in the circle.
The Mustangs worked to knot the game up at one, but were unable to convert on a handful of breakaway attempts.
The Hawks continued their first half onslaught in the second half, outshooting the home Mustangs 26-4. New Paltz would score four times in the second half for the ultimate 5-0 victory. Justine O'Reilly led the Hawks in scoring, picking up two goals on the day.
The Mustangs will have some time to rest and re-group before they hit the turf again. Morrisville heads out on a weekend road trip on September 22 and 23, facing Cortland in another SUNYAC contest before traveling to Hartwick for a non-conference tilt.
