MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team erased an early goal with a big second half to defeat the Keuka College Wolves on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 3-1.
The Wolves came out hungry early, putting the Mustangs on their heels with a goal just one minute and thirteen seconds into the contest. However, the Mustangs defense tightened up the rest of the way.
While the defense held firm, the Mustangs still struggled to find the back of the cage as they could not convert on their four opportunities in the opening half. It was not until senior, Elizabeth Leva (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) tallied her tenth goal of the season just under five minutes into the second half. Brianna Fischetti (Wading River, N.Y.) found a seam at the top of the circle and snuck a pass to the back left post to the waiting stick of Leva who quickly beat the Wolves keeper to the right corner of the cage.
Knotted up 1-1, Morrisville would be forced to wait eleven minutes to break the tie. At the 51:21 mark, Emily Hunt (Harpursville, N.Y.) gave the Mustangs the edge on an unassisted tally after she took a rebound off the goalie's pads to the right side of the cage.
Despite the one goal advantage, the Mustangs continued to be pressured by the Keuka offense. Morrisville's keeper Joelle Freiermuth (Marcy, N.Y.) picked up 2 key saves in the second half after coming into the match at half time.
With just over ten minutes left to play, Hayley Fonfara (Elma, N.Y.) gave Morrisville a little more breathing room when she recorded her third goal of the season to give the Mustangs the 3-1 lead. Hunt picked up the assist on the play when she slipped a pass from left of the cage to the right, finding the stick of Fonfara.
This afternoon's game marked the final home game for the Mustangs who play their final three games on the road. The first of which takes place on Friday at Bryn Athyn College. Game time is set for 7 PM.
