Mustangs net fourth straight victory behind balanced offensive effort, top Wells 88-78

AURORA, N.Y. – Five from visiting Morrisville State College netted double figures as they collected an 88-78 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory Saturday afternoon over host Wells College on the road in Aurora.

The win is the fourth straight for the Mustangs who improve to 15-8 on the season, and boast a 13-2 NEAC record to complete the series sweep. Wells falls to 7-16, 5-9 in conference play.

Senior Trent Ward (Auburn, N.Y.) and sophomore Derek Beames (Otego, N.Y.) each registered 18 points on the afternoon to lead the Morrisville State efforts, Ward collecting a double-double with 10 added rebounds, while assisting three and contributing three steals. Beames was 7-for-11 from the floor, and added six boards as well, assisting the Mustangs to a 33-31 advantage on the glass.

Brison Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 13 points while teammate Tyrin Miller (White Plains, N.Y.) had a near perfect shooting effort for 12 points, hitting 5-of-6. Stefan Marchlewski (Wloclawek, Poland) rounded out the balanced effort with 11 points, adding a team high four assists in the victory.

Both teams played to a back and forth opening half until Morrisville State put together a 6-0 spurt in the final 1:34 of the contest to claim the 39-34 advantage at the break.

They carried the momentum over to the second half where they opened with a three from Ward to kick off a 7-2 spurt to open the contest to a 10-point lead, one that increased to 16 a mere three minutes into the final period.

Morrisville State increased their lead to as many as 23 midway through the half, before Wells stormed back and put together a 20-5 run, cutting the lead to eight with 1:05 to go on the clock.

Unfortunately for the Express, their offense stalled and Morrisville State went on to hit 5-of-6 free throws over a 30 second span, widening the gap to 12 en route to the conference win.

The Mustangs return to the court Tuesday, traveling to Cazenovia in a battle of Route 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Cazenovia.
