Three goal opening period lifts Geneseo over Morrisville State 6-3

GENESEO, N.Y. – Host SUNY Geneseo scored three times in the opening period and added another three over the final two, to top visiting Morrisville State College ice hockey by a 6-3 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) final on opening day in Geneseo.

Senior Ryan Marcuz (Richmond Hill, ON) led Morrisville State with two tallies on the night, while John Doyle (Hawthorne, N.J.) posted his first collegiate goal. Darren Young (Woodstock, ON) and Daniel Morello (Vaughan, ON) each had assists.

Christopher Azzano (Oshawa, ON) recorded the loss in net, posting 36 saves.

Geneseo struck first, netting a power play score midway through the opening period, before Marcuz responded minutes later with his first tally of the season, an unassisted power play tally with 9:34 to go.

The Ice Knights rallied to add two additional goals before the end of the first, taking a 3-1 lead into the second, where they posted the lone score for the 4-1 advantage heading into the final frame.

In the third, Marcuz cut the lead to two with his second power play tally, connecting on a pass from Young just 18 seconds into the period.

Geneseo regained a three goal advantage, however, netting an empty netter midway through.

Morrisville State again was able to cut it to a two goal game with 6:42 to go in the period, this time as Morello hit Doyle for the power play tally.

The Knights took advantage of the Mustangs pulling Azzano for the extra skater, and posted their second empty net goal of the night, sealing the 6-3 conference win.

Morrisville State returns to the ice Saturday night, again facing the Knights at 7 p.m.
