Third period lifts Valiants over Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. –

Visiting Manhattanville College hockey scored three times in the final period, to hand host Morrisville State College a 6-3 non-conference decision Saturday night in Morrisville.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 4-10-2 overall, while the Valiants improve to 10-6.

Morrisville State had three post goals on the night, including Joe Santino (Woodbridge, ON), John Doyle (New Lowell, ON) and Rob Molinaro (Yonkers, N.Y.).

Christopher Azzano (Oshawa, ON) registered 26 saves in the losing effort for the Mustangs, including 13 in the final frame.

Playing to a scoreless contest, Manhattanville was able to put one on the board at the 15:23 mark, capitalizing off a Mustang turnover within their own defensive zone and firing the stick side shot past Azzano for the 1-0 lead.

Seconds into the second frame, Santino evened the score at one, flicking the wrist shot over the glove of Valiant goaltender Brian Fleming at 00:58.

Manhattanville regained the one goal lead at 5:18 as Adam Platt put away the wrist shot on a center cut feed from Anton Rackin. Within seconds, the Valiants added another for a two goal cushion.

The Mustangs made it a 3-2 game midway through the period on a power play, as Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, ON) made a break on the right side of the ice and crossed the puck to Doyle on the left who put away the one-timer to cut the visitor lead to one at 12:35.

Late in the third, Manhattanville regained the two goal advantage, deflecting the puck on the right side of the crease off a feed from the left corner, before adding another tally minutes later on a wide open look at net for a 5-2 lead.

Molinaro brought the Mustangs to within two as he collected the rebound off a Tyson Avery (Monkton, ON) bullet from blue line at 16:59, but the Valiants added another score in the final seconds to secure the win.

Morrisville State held Manhattanville scoreless in power play opportunities, while connecting on 2-of-6 chances of their own.
