MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's hockey team recorded their first victory over SUNY Cortland at home on Friday night. In the last two minutes of the third period, the Mustangs were able to pull away from the Dragons for a 6-4 win.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, scoring both goals within three minutes of each other. Brad Holman (Orangeville, Ontario) found the back of the net at 15:18 off an assist from Joe Ftoma (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and MJ Maerkl (Binghamton, N.Y.). Just three minutes later, Layne Martin (Findlay, O.H.) scored on a power play form Matt Beer (Corunna, Ontario) and Darren Young (Woodstock, Ontario). The first period ended with the Mustangs ahead 2-0.
Cortland scored the only goal of the second period, bringing the game to 2-1 advantage Morrisville. Less than three minutes into the third, Cortland scored off a power play to tie the game at 2. The Mustangs responded at 6:15 when Martin scored his second for the night, off an assist from Young. Less than a minute later Cortland once again tied the game at 3. At 9:52, Young scored his first of the night for the lead. Under a minute later, the Dragons tied the game back at 4.
With time running out, Rob Molinaro (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored with under two minutes to take the lead, off an assist from Young and Martin. With forty seconds left in the game, Molinaro stole the puck from the Dragons and scored on the empty net to seal the advantage for the win.
Steven Dombrosky (Elizabethtown, PA) recorded the win and 33 saves for the day.
The Mustangs will host the Dragons tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Ice Plex.
