MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team was unable to withstand a strong third period attack from Fredonia on Saturday night, falling to the Blue Devils at home, 6-2.
Similar to last night, it was the Blue Devils who got on the board first with an even handed goal at 15:12. The struck gain just over two minutes later on a power play goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
However, the Mustangs chipped away, cutting the lead in half with 31 seconds remaining in the first period on a power play goal of their own. Henry Hearon (Chicago, Ill.) notched the goal on a bullet shot from the blue line. Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) and John Lauer (Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied the assists.
Morrisville weathered a difficult 3 minutes early in the second period as they skated for part of the time two men down. However, a Fredonia penalty just over seven minutes in, caused the two teams to skate at four skaters each. Shortly thereafter, the Mustangs returned to full strength and notched their second power play goal of the game at 8:51. Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) converted on an original shot by Lauer. DeVito also assisted on the play.
However, the tie was short lived, as Fredonia's Bobby Polacek converted an unassisted goal for a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Blue Devils pulled away in the third, scoring first at the 13:26 mark and then again at 17:01, bringing the score to 5-2 in favor of Fredonia.
Fredonia picked up a late penalty with 58 seconds remaining in the game. In an attempt to spark their offense, Morrisville pulled their goalie in favor of two extra skaters on the power play. However, a clear attempt by Fredonia's Jamie Young found the empty net, sealing the 6-2 victory for the Blue Devils.
The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, November 26 at 4 PM when they take on Mass.-Boston for a non-conference home match up.
