MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team returned to the ice on Saturday afternoon and picked up a 5-5 overtime tie with visiting UMass.-Boston.
UMass.-Boston entered the Morrisville State Ice Plex as the #3 team in the nation and they proved that early as the Beacons asserted themselves on the Mustangs' home ice with an even handed goal just two minutes and thirty seconds into the game.
The Beacons continued to pound the Morrisville net throughout the first period, but were unable to extend their lead until the 18:07 mark.
Down 2-0 in the second period, the Mustangs went to work quickly to even the score. Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) cut the lead in half at the 1:20 mark. John Lauer (Camillus, N.Y.) evened the score two minutes later on a power play goal.
Unfortunately, the tie was short lived as the Beacons went up 3-2 at the 4:46 mark.
UMass.-Boston extended their lead at the 12:57 mark in the third period with a short-handed goal, but the Mustangs fired back once again. Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) cut into the lead once again scoring at the 15:10 mark.
However, just as momentum shifted towards the hosts, the visiting Beacons took advantage of a Morrisville penalty, giving themselves another two goal lead.
Down 5-3 with just under four minutes remaining in the game, Morrisville continued to rally. Mike Giacometti (Mississauga, Ontario) brought the Mustangs within one with his first goal of the season at the 18:27 mark. With 52 seconds left in regulation, CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Utah) deposited the game-tying goal.
Despite the comeback, the Mustangs were forced to settle for the tie as they were unable to score in overtime.
Morrisville will look to ride this momentum into their upcoming SUNYAC series against Oswego State on Friday and Saturday, December 2 and 3. The Mustangs open the home and away series on their own ice on Friday night at 7 PM.
