Morrisville Rolls to 8-2 Victory over Buffalo State behind Santino’s Hat Trick

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team rebounded from a 4-2 loss on Friday night to defeat the Buffalo State Bengals 8-2 on the road on Saturday night.

The Bengals put the Mustangs on their heels early, scoring at the 2:50 mark in the first period.  However, the Mustangs capitalized on a power play opportunity at 8:38 to even the score.  Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) notched the early equalizer.  Assists on the goal were credited to CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Utah) and Max Sund (Stockholm, Sweden).

Ian Wood (Pittsburgh, Pa.) gave Morrisville the 2-1 lead just 33 seconds later with an even-handed goal.  Stevie Ray Adams (Akwesasne, Quebec) and Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio) picked up the assists.

Buffalo State fought back, just over four minutes later to tie the game up at 2-2 at the 13:48 mark.

The Bengals and Mustangs would remain deadlocked at 2 goals apiece for the remainder of the first period and halfway into the second.  Santino struck again for the Mustangs on another power play goal at the 11:51 mark in the second period, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of Morrisville.  Stubbs and Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) picked up the assists.

Up just 3-2 entering the third period, the Mustangs put their offense into overdrive. Morrisville picked up their third power play goal of the game and also the third of the game for Santino at the 1:00 mark for the 4-2 lead.

Morrisville would score four more times in the period before it was all said and done in Buffalo.  Ryan Bochert (Denver, Colo.) tallied the fifth score behind an assist from Joe Ftoma (Winnipeg, Manitoba).  Martin scored the sixth and eighth goals for the Mustangs, the first of which was assisted by Adams while his second was unassisted.  Carvalho tallied the seventh goal in a short-handed situation with a Buffalo State empty net.  Santino picked up the assist.

Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) picked up the win between the pipes for Morrisville, his fourth of the season behind a 41 save performance.

Morrisville will wrap up their 2016-2017 campaign next weekend with their final SUNYAC series against Cortland State.  The Mustangs will travel to the Red Dragons' home ice on Friday for a 7 PM puck drop before returning home for their final game on Saturday at 7 PM.
