MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey found themselves down early, but rallied back in the third period to walk away with a 2-2 tie on the road at Manhattanville University on Friday night.
The Mustangs struggled to get their offense rolling in the first period, only mustering five shots compared to 18 for the Valiants. Morrisville's goaltender, Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) kept the game at 0-0 as he denied all 18 shots he faced in the first.
Morrisville began to put more shots on goal in the second period, but it was Manhattanville who would strike first with an even handed tally just under four minutes into the second.
After the Valiants' goal, the Mustangs worked to knot up the game, recording six shots during four power play attempts. Unfortunately, each shot was denied and Manhattanville put one away with just under two minutes remaining in the second period for the 2-0 lead.
The third period was a different story for Morrisville, as they were able to capitalize on an early power play opportunity. Just 51 seconds in, John Lauer (Syracuse, N.Y.) sounded the horn to cut the Valiants' lead in half. Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Bradley Hefner (Billings, Mont.) picked up the assists.
The Mustangs turned their offense up a notch the rest of the way, outshooting Manhattanville 15-4 in the third, six of which came on additional power play attempts. Late in the third, Morrisville found the equalizer off of the stick of CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) on another power play. Hefner picked up the first assist, his second of the game, while Stevie Ray Adams (Akwesasne, Que.) picked up the other assist.
Tied up at 2 goals apiece, the season opener for both teams headed into overtime. The Mustangs weathered a Manhattanville power play and Young denied all five shots he faced to preserve the tie.
Morrisville will have a quick turnaround as they travel back from Manhattanville to host the Mustangs from Stevenson University at 5 PM in their home opener.
