Cortland’s Three-Goal Second Too Much for Mustangs, Fall 5-2

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team could not overcome a three-goal second period from the Red Dragons of Cortland State on Saturday night, falling 5-2 in a State Universities of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) match up.

The Mustangs out-shot the host Red Dragons 15-11 in the first period.  However, it was Cortland who opened the scoring on Saturday evening with a short-handed tally at 5:39.

The Red Dragons dominated the Mustangs for nearly all of the second period, pounding Morrisville with 18 shots on goal.  The shots paid off as Cortland scored three goals in the period.  The Red Dragons put away two even-handed goals at 6:41 and 8:42.  The fourth goal game on a power play at 16:01.

The Mustangs did not back down, putting up a power play goal of their own at 18:32.  CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.).  Bradley Hefner (Billings, Mont.) and John Lauer (Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up the assists.

Morrisville was able to cut the lead in half just under four minutes into the third period.  Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, Ill.) notched the goal with Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio) picking up the assist.

Unfortunately, just as the Mustangs gained momentum, Cortland shut the door with just over ten minutes remaining in the third, picking up their fifth goal of the contest.

Morrisville will continue with their SUNYAC schedule next weekend, hosting the Geneseo Knights on Friday, November 17 at 7 PM and Saturday, November 18 at 4 PM.
