MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team came out hot early, but the visiting SUNY Geneseo Knights put together a strong second period to down the Mustangs 5-1 in a State Universities of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.
Morrisville skated toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Knights throughout the first period. The Mustangs were the first to find the back of the net when Dane Moore (Cadillac, Mich.) ripped a laser from the left side just inside the blue line for a top right corner score. Jon Kasper (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and John Lauer (Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up the assists after working the puck around to Moore.
After the Mustangs' tally, Geneseo turned up the heat, but were unable to score as the Morrisville defense tightened up behind Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.). Young denied 15 shots in the first period, while several Mustangs put themselves in the line of fire picking up several blocks.
The second period, however, was the Knight's period as their forwards began to find openings to break through the Mustangs' defense. Just over two minutes into the second, David Szmyd broke away for Geneseo for a 1v1 on the right side to knot the game up at 1-1.
Just under three minutes later, Geneseo would break away again 1v1, taking the 2-1 lead at the 5:09 mark. The Knights then found a 2v1 opportunity in the seventh minute of play for the 3-1 lead halfway through the second period.
As Geneseo began to pull away, the Mustangs' offense went cold as the home squad was only able to put four shots on net during the period.
The Knights would score once more late in the second and again late in the third to secure the 5-1 win.
With the win, Geneseo moves to 6-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Mustangs fall to 1-4-2 overall and 1-4-0 in the SUNYAC.
The teams will wrap up their series tomorrow afternoon, once again on Morrisville's home ice, at 4 PM.
