Early Lead Erased as Mustangs Fall to Buffalo State 2-1

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team posted the first goal, but were unable to hang on to the lead ultimately falling 2-1 at home against Buffalo State in a State Universities of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest.

The Mustangs got on the board first just over halfway through the first period as they capitalized on a Bengals tripping penalty.  Aidan Conolly (Rochester, N.Y.) and Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, Ill.) worked the puck from right to left around the outside looking for an opening.  Philbin found an opening, slipping a pass to the left face-off circle to the waiting stick of CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) who reared back for a one-timer into the top right corner for the 1-0 lead.

The Bengals took over from there, outshooting the Mustangs 28-13 in the first two periods alone.  However, Jared Young (Paueblo West, Colo.) kept Morrisville in the game despite the shot disadvantage by turning away several open looks from the Bengals.

Buffalo State's attack on the net would eventually pay off at the 7:02 mark in the second period as they were able to convert on a power play attempt of their own to even the score at 1-1.

The Bengals broke the tie early in the third period when Vadim Vasjonkin slipped a pass from behind the net and across the crease to Ben Butcher for the goal.  Buffalo State withstood one more push from the Mustangs, weathering a man-down situation at the back end of the third period to hold on for the 2-1 win.

Both teams will regroup and return to the ice for the second game of the SUNYAC series at 7 PM tomorrow night at Morrisville State.
