Morrisville Completes SUNYAC Series Sweep, Down Potsdam 6-1

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team completed the State Universities of New York Athletic Conference series sweep of SUNY Potsdam on Saturday night, downing the visiting Bears 6-1.

The Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders offensively on Saturday night, posting the first goal of the game at the 3:25 mark in the first period.  Aidan Conolly (Rochester, N.Y.) notched his second goal of the season, ripping a one timer from just inside the blue line to give Morrisville the 1-0 advantage.

Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) extended the home squad's lead at the 14:12 mark.  While DeVito's first shot on goal was initially denied, teammates Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, Ill.) and CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) corralled the puck off the rebound, finding DeVito at the left post.  The goal was DeVito's team-leading 11th of the season.

Morrisville worked through several penalty kills throughout the second period to preserve their two-goal advantage.  The Mustangs diligence on defense translated into a potent offense as they rattled off three goals in three minutes late in the second.  Nick Sacco (Welland, Ont.) registered his first goal of the season at the 15:15 mark.  Ian Wood (Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed with his fifth goal of the season at the 17:16 mark when he put away the rebound from Stevie Ray Adams' (Akwesasne, Que.) initial shot.  Last night's hero, Rick Eberhart (Lockport, N.Y.) gave the Mustangs the 5-0 lead, just over a minute later at the 18:18 mark.

Down five goals, Potsdam turned up the heat in the third period, outshooting the Mustangs 16-8, but Morrisville found a way to extend their lead anyway.  Stubbs converted on a power play attempt at the 2:09 mark with a backhand flip from the left post.

Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) was superb in net for Morrisville, tallying 30 saves.  His, and the Mustangs' only blemish occurred at the 5:11 mark in the third when Brett Horn posted the only goal of the game for the Bears.

The Mustangs will wrap up their home slate of the 2017-2018 season next weekend when the host the Lakers from Oswego state before rounding out their regular season with two consecutive away weekends.  Puck is set to drop at 7 PM on both Friday, January 26 and Saturday, January 27 in the IcePlex.
