MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team saw a 2-0 early lead slip away as they fell 5-3 on the road in a State Universities of New York Athletic Conference matchup against the Golden Eagles from Brockport.
After being blanked the night before, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Saturday night, scoring both goals in a span of a minute. Dane Moore (Cadillac, Mich.) picked up an unassisted tally at the 3:44 mark in the first. Nick DeVito (Averill Park, N.Y.) followed up at 4:44 with his team-leading tenth goal of the season. CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) and Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, Ill.) notched assists, their thirteenth and seventh on the year respectively.
Unfortunately, the tides turned in the back half of the first period. The Golden Eagles cut the Morrisville lead in half at the 12:04 mark before tying the game up with a 3 v 5 skater power play goal with 28 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Though the first of the two late first period penalties was erased with the last first period goal, the Mustangs were still forced to skate a man down to open the second period. The Golden Eagles took advantage once again, taking a 3-2 lead just 18 seconds into the middle period.
Morrisville fought back, knotting the game back up at 3-3 at 2:42. Bradley Hefner (Billings, Mont.) tallied the one timer with Stevie Ray Adams (Akwesasne, Que.) assisting.
However, another power play opportunity late in the second caused Morrisville some problems. Brockport registered the go-ahead goal with 24 seconds remaining in the second.
The Mustangs received an opportunity to even the game up as the Golden Eagles were whistled for a hooking penalty at the 2:50 mark. The power play did not turn out the way Morrisville would hope as Brockport broke free for a short-handed goal at 4:06 to secure the 5-3 victory.
The Mustangs will have their SUNYAC bye week next weekend before wrapping up their regular season at Fredonia on Friday and Saturday, February 16 and 17. Both games are set to begin at 7 PM.
