Morrisville State men iced in season finale

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's ice hockey team concluded the 2017-18 season slate Saturday night in Fredonia, falling to the host Blue Devils who posted four straight in the second period, by a 6-2 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) final in Fredonia.

The loss wraps up the season at 6-16-3 overall, 3-13 within SUNYAC play.

Junior forward Jimmy Philbin (Chicago, Ill.) registered both scores for the Mustangs, while teammates Nick Devito (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Aidan Conolly (Rochester, N.Y.) collected assists.

Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) registered 18 saves in the loss between the pipes in nearly 43 minutes of action, before being replaced by Sal Stalteri (Woodbridge, Ontario) for the final 17 minutes, turning away 19.

Fredonia posted a late first period score to carry the 1-0 advantage into the second, but Philbin responded with a power play tally off the chip from Conolly to even the contest at one 48 seconds into the second frame.

Philbin collected his second at the 10:16 mark for a 2-1 Morrisville State lead, converting the back handed flick on the dish from Devito on the 2-on-1 in front of the Fredonia net.

The Mustangs lead was short lived, however, as they countered with three goals within a minute and 15 seconds time, the first a power play score at 13:21, followed another tally at 14:16 and a third just 20 seconds later for the 4-2 lead.

The Blue Devils added another at the 19:42 mark to carry the 5-2 advantage into the third period.

Fredonia put the game out of reach just two minutes into the final frame with their final score of the night.
