CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's lacrosse team notched their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win of the season Thursday afternoon, handing host Cazenovia College a 12-4 defeat in a showdown of cross town rivals.
The win boosts the Mustangs to 6-2 overall, 1-0 in conference play. Cazenovia falls to 3-1 on the year, 0-1 in NEAC action.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a stellar performance in net for Morrisville State, registering 17 total saves on the day, 12 alone in the second half that were point blank shots on top of the crease, to earn the win.
Offensively, a trio of Mustangs posted hat-tricks, including Richie Fischer (Rochester, N.Y.) who tallied a collegiate high three goals.
Jeremy Beresovoy (Jamesville, N.Y.) and Louie Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) each added three scores apiece, while three additional teammates contributed to the winning effort.
Brandon Maxson paced Cazenovia with three goals while teammate Pat Boyle registered 17 saves in the losing effort for the Wildcats.
Morrisville State stuttered out of the gates and held the 1-0 advantage after the opening quarter before exploding for seven tallies in the second quarter.
The Mustangs added four more scores in the second half, while Fiore put up a wall to secure the conference win.
Morrisville State held the 42-29 advantage in shots on the day, and dominated the ground ball battle 42-20. Faceoff specialist, John Petriello (Carmel, N.Y.), controlled the center line, winning 13-of-19 face-offs for the Mustangs.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, hosting Alfred State at 1 p.m. on Drake Field.
