Morrisville State men fall 8-4 to Geneseo in non-conference play

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville State College men's lacrosse dropped to 1-1 overall Saturday, as visiting SUNY Geneseo collected an 8-4 non-conference win over the Mustangs on Drake Field in Morrisville.

With the win, the Knights up their record to 3-0.

Junior John Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) led Morrisville State with two goals, while freshmen Noah Greger (Danbury, Conn.) and Greg Esposito (Yorktown, N.Y.) rounded out scoring with one each. Richie Fischer (Rochester, N.Y.) and Louie Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) each had one assist on the day.

Junior goalie Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) had nine total saves in the loss in net, three that came in the final quarter.

Geneseo had three post two scores each, including Steven Cregan who collected four points on his two goals and two assists, while teammate Michael Engstrom added two goals and an assist, and Zach Yehl two goals.

Alex Howell recorded the win, registering 10 saves on the day.

Geneseo opened the first quarter with three straight scores in just over two minutes of action, two off the stick of Yehl.

The visitors held Morrisville State scoreless for nearly 22 minutes of action before Sherlock broke the drought with a man-up score down the center of the box off a pass from Geswaldo to make it a 4-1 game.

The Knights added one final score before the end of the half, as Cregan put one into the lower corner of the net with 6.9 ticks showing on the clock.

Morrisville State posted the first goal of the third quarter at 4:03, as Fischer fed a cutting Esposito who buried the shot past Howell to cut the deficit to three, but Geneseo added another tally with 1:16 to go to carry the 6-2 lead into the final quarter of play.

Geneseo took advantage of a fast break minutes into the fourth quarter, as Tim Wright notched the goal for a 7-2 cushion, before Sherlock posted his second of the contest at the 8:17 mark, collecting the rebound off a Howell save and firing it over his left shoulder for the score.

Engstrom added a security score with 3:14 to go for the visitors, for the five goal advantage, as Morrisville State notched its final tally of the day on a transition score from Greger.

Morrisville State returns to the field Wednesday, traveling to SUNY Plattsburgh for a 3 p.m. faceoff.
