MARCY, N.Y. – Visiting Morrisville State College men's lacrosse used a dominating seven goal second quarter to hand host SUNY Polytechnic a 16-7 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) defeat Wednesday evening in Marcy.
The win is the third straight for the Mustangs as they improve their record to 6-2 on the year, and remain undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 NEAC stint. SUNY Poly drops to 4-8 overall, 2-2 in NEAC action.
Nine different Mustangs posted scores on the day, including John Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) who led Morrisville State with six points behind his three goals and three assists, while teammate Louie Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) added four goals.
Chris Fiore (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up the win in net, saving six in 40 minutes of play, before Dan Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) anchored the defense between the pipes for the final 20, making eight stops.
Morrisville State controlled the 'X', winning 21-of-27 faceoffs. Scott Augustine (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) went 9-for-10 from the center line, while teammate John Petriello (Carmel, N.Y.) was 6-for-8 and Shawn Walberger (Fulton, N.Y.) posted six wins in nine attempts.
The Mustangs also dominated the ground ball battle, outgaining the Wildcats 48-27 on the day, including a 14-4 advantage after the first quarter. Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) led Morrisville State with seven pick-ups, adding two scores and an assist to his tallies across the day.
Nick Levanti led the SUNY Poly efforts with three scores on the night, with teammate Andrew Wurz adding two others.
RJ Ferrucci recorded the loss between the pipes for the Wildcats, saving 18, as Morrisville State held the 48-30 advantage in shots.
Morrisville State opened the game with six straight scores, posting four alone in the first quarter and adding two additional in the opening minutes of the second for the 6-0 lead before the Wildcats were able to get on the board. Within minutes, a Sherlock score ignited a 4-0 Mustang run, leading to the 11-2 halftime lead in favor of the visitors.
Louie Geswaldo added two additional tallies for the Mustangs in the third, before Morrisville State rattled off three more in the final quarter to secure the conference win.
The Mustangs return to the field Sunday, hosting Hilbert College at 2 p.m. on Drake Field in their annual benefit game for wounded veterans. General donations will be accepted at the door for the event, as well as bids for their commemorative jersey auction.
