Morrisville State men wrap up regular season with 10-5 win over Hilbert

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Visiting Morrisville State College (8-5) concluded the 2017 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 10-5 victory over host Hilbert College, on the Hawks home field in Hamburg.

The win lifts Morrisville State to 7-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play, as they await tournament seeding as announced by the conference office this weekend.

Attack duo Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) and Chris Dovi (Cortland, N.Y.) combined for six of the Mustang's 10 total scores, netting three each, while both adding two assists to their totals on the day.

Richard Yelk (Reading, Pa.), Joe Piedigrossi (Cortland, N.Y.), Corey Grace (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and Mike Ready (Lafayette, N.Y.) each added one to round out the Morrisville State goal scorers.

Tyler Catalfano (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded 16 saves for the win between the pipes, allowing five scores in 58 minutes of play, before Dan Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) finished out the final two minutes in net.

Morrisville State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening quarter, with the first tally coming at the 10:52 mark as Geswaldo found Dovi for the opening score. Nearly four minutes later, Dovi found Geswaldo for his 39th tally of the season, coming on the extra man opportunity for a 2-0 lead.

Grace added a final strike with 2:11 remaining in the first, netting the goal off the assist from Dovi.

Hilbert got back in the game with four goals in the second quarter, including the first two of the frame, but Morrisville State added two of their own, a second extra man tally to maintain the 5-4 lead at the break.

Much like the opening 15, the Mustangs posted the lone tallies of the third, both coming from Geswaldo, including one on an extra man situation, for a 7-4 visitor lead after three quarters of play.

Morrisville State put the game out of reach in the fourth with two strikes a mere eight seconds apart: the first a tally by Dovi off the lead pass by Yelk at 14:52, before Yelk added one of his own at 14:44 off the face off win by Shawn Walberger (Fulton, N.Y.).

Ready added a final score for the Mustangs with less than five minutes to go to put the game out of reach for the 10-5 win.

The Mustangs will learn their seed in the upcoming NEAC Championship Tournament opening round opponent Sunday. Semifinals are scheduled to take place at the higher seed of the bracket midweek.
