CORTLAND, N.Y. – Host SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse rattled off eight third quarter goals as they handed visiting Morrisville State College a 19-9 non-conference loss Saturday afternoon in Cortland.
The Red Dragons up their overall record to 4-2, while Morrisville State drops to 0-6.
Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.) posted four goals to lead the Mustangs efforts, followed by a hat trick from fellow attackman Trevor Jones (Lafayette, N.Y.).
Logan Peters (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Chris Dovi (Cortland, N.Y.) each collected one goal, while dishing out a combined three assists.
Dan Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) registered 17 saves in the loss in net, nine in the first half of action, as Cortland held the 55-33 advantage in shots on the day.
The hosts were the first two strike and raced out to a 4-1 lead with over five minutes to go in the opening quarter, netting the first tally of the afternoon just over a minute in.
Geswaldo countered Cortland's first score at 12:06 and added another with 2:51 to go to cut the deficit to two. Peters converted his fifth of the season with 10 ticks remaining in the first quarter, making it a 4-3 game in favor of the Red Dragons after one.
In the second, the hosts rattled off three straight within a four minute span, opening the lead to four, but again the Mustangs wouldn't bow, as they notched two straight to close the gap to two. Dovi posted one at the 9:04 mark, before Jones notched one not even a minute later off the feed from Peters.
Cortland added a final strike at the 6:03 mark to carry the 8-5 advantage into the locker room at the break.
In the third, the Red Dragons offense exploded and outgained Morrisville State 8-1, to carry a commanding 16-6 lead into the final frame.
The Mustangs lone tally of the third was off the stick of Jones, who put away the feed from Dovi at the 3:23 mark.
Both teams posted three in the final quarter, Cortland adding to their already double digit lead with two straight for the 18-6 advantage before the visitors rallied for three consecutive scores, two from Geswaldo and another from Jones.
Cortland posted the final score of the day with 2:05 to go, collecting the 19-9 win.
Morrisville State returns to the field Wednesday, traveling to Kings College for a non-league battle with the Monarchs.
