MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's lacrosse team opened North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play Wednesday afternoon, handing visiting Hilbert College a 9-5 loss on Drake Field in Morrisville.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 2-7 on the season (1-0 in NEAC action). Hilbert drops to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in conference play.
Brad Biggs (Tully, N.Y.) and Peter Pina (Culver City, Calif.) led the Morrisville State all around efforts with two goals apiece, while five additional teammates notched one, including Logan Peters (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) who collected two assists in the win as well.
Senior goalkeeper Dan Sherlock (Tully, N.Y.) made 13 stops to secure the win in net, turning away eight in the second half of action.
Morrisville State dominated at the center X, winning 12-of-18 face-offs, seven from junior Shawn Walberger (Fulton, N.Y.) and another five from freshman Nate McCormick (Cortland, N.Y.). Walberger collected a team high five ground balls.
The Mustangs scored three in the opening quarter and claimed a 3-1 lead heading into the second, as Nick Geswaldo (Lafayette, N.Y.), Biggs and Pina each notched a score for the hosts.
Morrisville State took a three goal lead early on in the second, before the Hawks responded with two straight, cutting the deficit to one, and entered the break trailing 5-4.
Thomas Knapp (Walworth, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the third to give the hosts the two goal cushion, before Morrisville State rattled off two straight in the fourth to claim the 8-4 lead.
Marc O'Neill posted an unassisted score for Hilbert with 6:15 to go, in an attempt to rally the visitors, but Chris Dovi (Cortland, N.Y.) rifled the final dagger with 4:26 to go to round out all scoring on the day, giving the Mustangs the 9-5 victory.
Morrisville State returns to the field Wednesday, traveling to Bryn Athyn College.
