Morrisville State men see season come to a close in opening round of NCAA tourney

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's soccer team saw their season come to an end Saturday evening, as they fell 5-1 to host SUNY Cortland in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

The Mustangs conclude their season at 16-4 overall, while No. 6 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland advances to the second round of tournament play.

Morrisville State got on the board first in the contest, netting the opening score in the 16th minute as Jamieson McKoy (Basseterre, St. Kitts) put away the breakaway feed from Griffen MacWatters (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) for the early lead.

That lead held until a blast from Michael Miner at a sharp angle on the left side deflected off the hands Morrisville State goalkeeper Eric Berglund (Elmira, N.Y.) into the upper right corner of the net to even the contest at the 29:12 mark.

An own goal for Cortland 44 seconds before the halftime period gave the hosts the 2-1 lead at the break.

A second Miner score just two minutes into the second half gave the Red Dragons the two goal lead, and Morrisville State wasn't able to recover as Cortland added two additional tallies to pull away with the convincing 5-1 win.

Berglund finished with seven saves in the loss, as Cortland held the 26-9 advantage in shots on the night.
