MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Four different players each posted a score Sunday afternoon as the host Morrisville State College men's soccer team got back on track with a 4-2 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win over visiting Bryn Athyn College on Drake Field in Morrisville.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 4-7 to date on the year, 3-2 in conference play. The Lions drop to 4-6 on the year, 1-4 within the NEAC.
Both teams battled back and forth in the opening 13 minutes of the contest before senior Julian Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) navigated his way down the right sideline before sending a cross to the center of the box, where sophomore Kossi Philippe Nodjo (New York City, N.Y.) one-timed the cross into the back of the net for the early lead.
Just over eight minutes later, the Lions took advantage of a defensive error and evened the score at one as Matheus Souza caught Morrisville State keeper Cody Welkey (North Rose, N.Y.) out of position and knocked home the misplayed ball for the score.
Morrisville State capitalized in the 34th minute off a Bryn Athyn error to take the 2-1 lead, as Stephen Oduro (Kumasi, Ghana) collected the deflected ball for a one-touch inside the left post.
Just over a minute later, the lead was extended to two as Julian Correa (Queens, N.Y.) headed in the cross from Griffen MacWatters (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) from the right off the corner kick, giving the hosts the 3-1 lead after the first half.
In the second, the defensive line played the ball forward to the feet of Rodriguez who won the battle and slid the ball over to an open Marco Delcid (Lambertville, N.J.) for his first collegiate score, and 4-1 advantage in the 65th minute.
Bryn Athyn was able to get one back at the 78:01 mark as Edgar Rodriguez curved the corner kick into the upper right corner, cutting the deficit to two, but that's as close as they would get as Welkley closed out the half with two critical saves down the stretch.
Welkley finished with six stops in the win in net.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, hosting Penn College in a noon start on Drake Field in Morrisville.
