Morrisville State men make early exit from NEAC Tournament

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College men's soccer team saw the 2017 season come to a close Tuesday, as they fell in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship Tournament quarterfinal round to visiting SUNY Polytechnic by a 3-1 final on Drake Field in Morrisville.

The Mustangs finish 7-10-1 overall.

SUNY Poly opened all scoring with the first tally of the afternoon inside the five minute mark as Gerry Thermil headed the cross from the right from about 35 yards out from Grant Calogero past Morrisville State keeper Cody Gaines (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) for the 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute later, Morrisville State responded to even the score at one, as a foul by the Wildcats just outside the box gave the hosts the free kick which Julian Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) got through the wall and to the foot of Stephen Oduro (Kumasi, Ghana) for the one-touch score inside the left post.

In the 69th minute, a chip forward by Andrew Kessler found Benjamin Alonge who used two touches to get inside the box and fire the ball inside the left post for the go ahead 2-1 lead.

Alonge struck again for the Wildcats in the 84th minute to seal the victory, one-timing the corner kick form Zack Joseph for the 3-1 win.

Gaines recorded two stops for the Mustangs in net. Alexander Gigliotti registered four in the win for Poly.

SUNY Poly advances to the semi-finals to be played Saturday.
