Morrisville State men end season with heartbreaking loss to Penn College in NEAC Quarterfinals

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State men's soccer team saw their 2018 season come to an end Tuesday afternoon, falling to visiting Penn College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Quarterfinals. Deadlocked at 1-1 after two overtime periods, the Mustangs were unable to survive two consecutive goals in shootout, as Penn College earned their second straight appearance in the NEAC semifinals.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Mustangs outshot Penn College 9-5 in the first half, however neither team was able to connect with the back of the net and entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
  • The Wildcats broke through at 54:12 when Daniel Jackson netted the first goal of the game in a scramble in front of the net. The assist was credited to Kevin McFarland.
  • 15' later, Morrisville State caught a break evening the score at 1-1. After a Mustang shot was blocked, a deflection off of a Penn College defender found the back of the net.
  • Neither team could post a score in overtime; the Mustangs best opportunity came at the 105:26 mark when junior forward, Kossi Philippe Nodjo (New York City, NY) took a penalty kick off of a foul in the box, but was denied by Wildcat goalkeeper, Hunter Gosnell.
  • In shootout, Gosnell stopped four consecutive shootout attempts in goal for the Wildcats. Both McFarland and Jackson scored on their attempts, earning the win for Penn College.
  • Morrisville State outshot Penn College 24-14 on the day, while the Wildcats held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper, Cody Welkley (North Rose, NY) posted 6 saves in 110' of action on the afternoon.  
  • With the win, Penn College advances to the NEAC semifinals to face No. 2 Lancaster Bible on Saturday afternoon.
