Cazenovia claws way past Morrisville State in softball double

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College softball team dropped a double-header decision to nearby Route 20 rival Thursday afternoon, falling 9-1 in game one and 10-8 in game two.

The losses drop Morrisville State to 2-11 overall, 2-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action.

In game one, Cazenovia scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning that the Mustangs had a hard time overcoming. Morrisville State was able to muster six hits in the game, as four went 1-for-2 from the plate, including Beth Marr (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) who added the lone Mustang run to her tallies.

Erika Kenney (Duanesburg, N.Y.) recorded the loss on the mound, throwing five innings and allowing seven earned runs.

In the nightcap, Cazenovia jumped out to a 9-1 lead after three innings before the Mustangs put together a furious comeback attempt in the bottom of the fourth inning, part due to the hot bat from Liz Miller (East Greenbush, N.Y.) who went 2-for-4 on the day, including a double that drove in a run to spark the seven run frenzy for Morrisville State. Miller scored twice on the day for the Mustangs, once in the first inning.

Krista Baxter (Downsville, N.Y.) posted the loss on the mound for the Mustangs, throwing seven innings and allowing nine earned runs while striking out five.

Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, hosting Keuka College at 3:30 p.m. for a NEAC double-header.
