Cobleskill sweeps NEAC double against Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Cobleskill was able to hold off a late surge by host Morrisville State College to sweep the softball double-header with final scores of 9-4 and 5-3 Friday afternoon in Morrisville.

The losses drop the Mustangs to 3-18 overall, 3-9 in conference play.

In game one, Cobleskill posted a combined five runs between the first and second innings enroute to their 9-4 victory.

Courtney Purcell (Fabius, N.Y.) led Morrisville State's efforts from the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while teammate Morgan Plummer (Manahattan, N.Y.) added a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and two runs scored.

Erika Kenney (Duanesburg, N.Y.) recorded the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits and registering three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Morrisville State led 2-0 after the first inning before the Fighting Tigers posted a comeback with a four run fourth inning, and staved off the Mustangs down the stretch to secure the 5-3 conference victory.

Purcell again led the Mustangs efforts from the plate, hitting 1-of-2 for an RBI, adding a run, with teammate Tori Schultz (Camden, N.Y.) added a 1-for-1 effort.

Krista Baxter (Downsville, N.Y.) threw the loss for the Mustangs, posting two strikeouts in the five earned run effort.

Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, hosting SUNYIT for a double-header at 1 p.m. in Morrisville.
