CLERMONT, FLA – The Morrisville State College softball team withstood a sixth inning rally by the College of St. Elizabeth to collect the first win of the 2018 season with a final score of 3-2 in Clermont, Florida Thursday night.
The Mustangs improve to 1-3 to date on the season and return to the diamond for two final games of their spring break training trip, facing Elizabethtown at 11:30, followed by Lebanon Valley at 2 p.m.
Holly Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Emily Vesely (Johnson City, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4 from the plate for the Mustangs, both recording a double, while collecting two runs and Vesely an RBI.
Allyson Kowalczyk (Hinesdale, Mass.) and Jessie Davis (Franklin, N.Y.) each added a hit to the Mustangs eight on the night, batting 1-for-1 in their appearances at the plate. Leah Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) also recorded an RBI.
Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) threw a complete game for the Mustangs from the mound, allowing eight hits and two runs, while striking out two in 33 batters faced.
In the first two innings of the contest, both teams were able to place runners on base, but could not capitalize until the bottom of the third when the Mustangs scored two on three hits in the inning.
Amanda Labe (Friedensburg, Pa.) led off the inning with a bunt towards third, and followed with a stolen base, before a grounder by Leah Gamlen advanced her within reach of scoring, to third. Vesely followed with a single to left field to score Labe, before advancing to second on a passed ball.
An error by the Eagles short stop resulted in the Mustangs closing out the inning with a 2-0 lead after Vesely scored on the St. Elizabeth error.
Morrisville State added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Gamlen led off the inning with a single to left field, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Labe advanced Gamlen with a sac bunt, before Leah Gamlen registered the RBI with a grounder to second. St. Elizabeth was able to hold the Mustangs to just one run, despite a double by Vesely late in the inning.
The Eagles rallied in the top of the sixth inning scoring two, but Morrisville State was able to hold on down the stretch as St. Elizabeth was held scoreless and the Mustangs picked up the 3-2 win.
