Morrisville State’s bats roll in sweep of Notre Dame (Md.)  

 

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morrisville State College picked up two wins Saturday afternoon, as they swept host Notre Dame College (Md.) by final scores of 10-1 and 13-1 behind their combined 27 hits, in five and six innings held in Baltimore at Morgan State University.

The Mustangs improve to 3-5 to date on the young season, and return to the field next Saturday, traveling to Nazareth College for a 3 p.m. double-header start.

In the first of the day's action, Morrisville State exploded for 15 hits from the plate and capitalized on their base running as they outgained the hosts by a 10-1 final in five innings.

Emily Vesely (Johnson City, N.Y.) and Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.) each went 3-for-4 from the plate, Vesely collecting two runs, while Dillabough batted in three and scored once.

Holly Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, N.Y.), along with Allyson Kowalczyk (Hinsdale, Mass.) each added a 2-for-4 effort from the plate as well, collectively registering five runs and two RBI's.

Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) collected the win on the mound, throwing a complete game, and allowing just two hits and an earned run, while striking out five in 21 batters faced.

Morrisville State posted two straight hits in the top of the first before Dillabough collected a single to score Kennedy for the Mustangs 1-0 lead. Terrier followed with a double to cross Vesely at home and give the visitors the 2-0 advantage after the top frame.

A single down the left line scored Notre Dame's lead off runner, to cut the lead to one, but the Mustangs defense turned a double play to end the inning, leaving two on base.

Morrisville State added to their lead with three runs in the second, Gamlen reaching on an error, before sister, Leah Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) slammed a triple to right field to notch another on the board for the Mustangs.

Gamlen and Kennedy each reached home, L. Gamlen off the single from Kennedy, and Kennedy from the bat of Dillabough, who singled to right center for the RBI.

After three straight strikeouts by Terrier in the bottom of the second, Morrisville State increased their lead to 6-1 as Kowalczyk scored off a double from Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, N.Y.) down the left line. Kowalczyk reached on a triple to right field.

Morrisville State ran away with the victory in the fourth, continuing their connection at the plate, as Jada-Faye Bennett (Manhattan, N.Y.), Kowalczyk, Vesely and Dillabough each recorded runs.

Kowalczyk poked a double to right center to send Faye home, and Hobbie followed with a hard hit to second to score Kowalczyk. After Vesely reached on a double to right field, Dillabough stepped to the plate and sent a triple to right center before crossing home herself on a sacrifice hit by the Mustangs next batter.

King threw the loss for Notre Dame, allowing five earned runs and collecting two strikeouts in 35 Mustang at bats.

Morrisville State continued their success at the plate in the second of the day's double-header, collecting 12 hits as they downed the hosts 13-1 in six innings.

H. Gamlen led Morrisville State with a 3-for-5 performance from the plate, adding three RBI's and two runs, while Dillabough went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run.

L. Gamlen also registered three RBI's, scoring twice, while recording a hit.

Kennedy recorded her first collegiate win, throwing four innings and allowing one earned run and three hits while striking out five in her inaugural collegiate appearance on the mound.

Terrier finished the final two innings, allowing just one hit in nine batters faced.

In the opening inning, Dillabough collected a single to center field to score L. Gamlen, who reached on an error by first, for the Mustangs first run of the contest.

Notre Dame evened the score in the bottom of the frame, but Morrisville State collected two more scores in the top of the second, to regain the lead and extend it to 3-1.

Kowalczyk doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, before H. Gamlen stepped to the plate and hit in the Mustangs lead runner with a single.

The Mustangs broadened the gap in the top of the fourth, scoring four, three earned. Bennett led off the inning with a double to left center, before H. Gamlen collected the RBI three batters later. L. Gamlen singled to center to score Hobbie, before scoring herself on a single to right field from Vesely.

After a run by Bennett in the top of the fifth, Morrisville State put the game away in the sixth inning with five runs, two earned. Vesely sent one to left field and reached on error and Dillabough followed with a triple to right center before scoring herself off a single to center off the bat of Bennett. H. Gamlen batted in Bennett with her single to left, and Kennedy followed with a single to score Hobbie.

Notre Dame was able to corral the Mustangs with a put out at short stop.

The hosts attempted a rally in the bottom of the sixth, but the Mustangs defense forced Notre Dame to leave three on base, as the visitors collected the win.

Morseman threw the loss for the hosts, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs, while posting five strikeouts.
