AURORA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College softball team earned a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) split with Wells College Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-0 in game one, before posting the 6-4 victory in the night cap held in Aurora.
The Mustangs pick up their first NEAC win of the season to improve to 4-12 overall, 1-7 in conference play.
In game one, Wells held a 2-0 lead through the third inning before posting three unearned runs in the fourth enroute to the 6-0 victory.
Allison McGuire (Gilboa, N.Y.) threw the loss, allowing two earned runs and 11 hits while striking out three.
Morrisville State posted two hits from the plate, one off the bat of Jada Faye Bennett (Manhattan, N.Y.) who went 1-for-3 from the plate on a single to right field, and the second, a double from Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, N.Y.) down the left line as she went 1-for-2 from the plate.
In the night cap, Morrisville State scored two in the bottom of the first, as a Hobbie hit her second double of the afternoon, this time to left center, to drive in lead off Amanda Labe (Friedensburg, Pa.) who reached on a single up the middle.
Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.) collected the RBI on a single to short to score Hobbie.
The Mustangs added to their lead in the bottom of the second, as Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) shot a single to short before Labe reached on her second hit of the day. Hobbie blasted a single through the middle to score Terrier, before Labe advanced to home on a throwing error by the Wells third baseman.
Morrisville collected a fifth run in the third, as Terrier recorded her second hit of the day, a single to the right, to score Emily Vesely (Johnson City, N.Y.) who reached on a single of her own.
Wells charged back in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on four hits, to cut the deficit to one behind their four run inning, but Morrisville State added a security run in the bottom of the sixth after Leah Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) blasted a triple to left center and Labe followed with a single to left field, making it a 6-4 ball game.
The Express attempted a late comeback in the top of the seventh, but the Mustangs defense held on for the conference win.
Terrier collected the win on the mound, allowing four earned runs behind seven hits.
Labe finished 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while Hobbie went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a run.
Vesely and Terrier each finished 2-for-3 in the second game, each recording a run, while Terrier picked up an RBI.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, traveling to Cazenovia College for a 1 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
