Wildcats sweep Mustangs in NEAC double

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Host Cazenovia College earned the double-header sweep over visiting Morrisville State College softball Saturday at Carrier Park Field of Dreams located in East Syracuse, collecting the 7-0 and 8-3 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) wins behind a collective 20 hits.

The losses drop Morrisville State to 4-14 overall, 1-9 in NEAC play.

In game one, Cazenovia played three in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of back-to-back doubles to take a 3-0 lead.

They added four runs to their lead in the fifth, posting three straight hits that included a triple and double, and in the top of the following inning held the Mustangs scoreless despite three reaching base, to secure the conference win.

Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.), Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, N.Y.) and Leah Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) all went 1-for-3 from the plate in the Mustang efforts, with Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, ONT) adding a 1-for-4 batting effort.

Allison McGuire (Gilboa, N.Y.) threw the loss, allowing nine hits and three earned runs, while posting three strikeouts.

In the second of the day's action, Morrisville State broke through the Wildcats defense in the top of the third inning and plated a score after Gamlen hit a double and Allyson Kowalczyk (Hinsdale, Mass.) followed with an RBI as she reached on error.

Cazenovia responded, though, in the bottom of the inning with the equalizing score, plating one off an RBI single on their third at bat.

The hosts took the lead in the fifth inning, hitting a double and two homers, before cutting short a Mustang rally in the top of the sixth to secure the lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats capitalized on two fielding errors and added four more to their lead, carrying the 8-1 advantage into the top of the final frame.

Kowalczyk reached on error once again, before being driven home by a single from Claire Newman (Burlington, ONT) three batters later. Jada Faye Bennett (Manhattan, N.Y.) reached after being hit by a pitch, and pitch runner Jessie Davis (Franklin, N.Y.) crossed the plate after a single from Emily Vesely (Johnson City, N.Y.).

That's as close as the Mustangs would get, however, as the Cazenovia defense forced the game's third and final out one batter later.

Kennedy and Newman each went 2-for-4 from the plate for the Mustangs, with Gamlen adding a 1-for-3 effort with a run scored.

Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) threw 5.1 innings in the loss, allowing five earned runs and 10 hits, before being replaced by Kennedy for .2 innings. Kennedy collected one strikeout and allowed one hit.

Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, traveling to Keuka College for a noon double-header start.
