MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College softball team played their first home contest of the 2018 season Sunday as they hosted North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division opponent, Wilson College, but fell in cross divisional action by final scores of 12-1 and 13-2.
The Mustangs drop to 4-16 overall, 1-11 within NEAC action.
The highlight of the first of the afternoon came in the bottom of the fifth inning as Wilson's pitcher up to that point was throwing a no-hitter, but lead off Claire Newman (Burlington, Ontario) shot a home run off the left field flag to put the Mustangs on the board, and cut the visitor lead to 5-1.
Emily Vesely (Johnson City, N.Y.) followed with a second Morrisville State hit of the inning, a double to right center, but was unable reach home as the Phoenix defense forced two straight outs to end the inning.
Wilson put the game out of reach behind the throwing of Megan Potter, who collected 13 strikeouts on the mound along with the win, alongside their hitting at the plate, registering a game total 16 hits.
Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) recorded the loss, throwing 6.1 innings for the hosts, and allowing nine earned runs, while striking out three.
Allison McGuire (Gilboa, N.Y.) came in to relieve Kenendy, throwing the final two outs of the seventh, and allowing three hits.
In the second of the day's action, Wilson capitalized on a strong presence at the plate in the third, overcoming the Mustangs with a 12-run inning. Morrisville State's Bailey Dillabough (Massena, N.Y.) put an end to the Phoenix scoring on the final at bat with a line drive catch that she turned into a double play at second.
Morrisville State got back two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Dillabough shot a single to the right to reach as lead off for the inning, and Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) followed with her own, before a single by Amanda Labe (Friedensburg, Pa.) to left field scored Dillabough, and Kennedy poked an RBI to right to score Terrier.
The Mustangs were able to generate some hits at the plate, collecting seven in the night cap, including a 3-for-3 performance by Labe.
McGuire threw 2.1 innings in the loss, allowing five earned runs and recording a strikeout before being relieved by Terrier for the final 2.2 innings. Terrier allowed five earned runs.
Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, hosting SUNY Polytechnic in a North Division NEAC double-header, starting at 3:30 p.m.
