Fighting Tigers hit way to series sweep over Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Cobleskill posted a seventh inning comeback in game one and continued their hot bats in the nightcap as they downed host Morrisville State College softball 13-10 and 10-2 (5 innings) Friday afternoon in Morrisville.

In the first of the day's double, Cobleskill led 8-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, before the Mustangs battled back with a four run rally to reclaim the two run lead. The bats turned quickly, though, as Cobleskill posted five hits and five runs in the top of the seventh and held Morrisville State scoreless in the bottom of the final inning to claim the 13-10 victory.

Allison McGuire (Gilboa, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI's to lead the Mustangs batting efforts, while teammate Claire Newman (Burlington, Ontario) added a 2-for-4 effort with three RBI's.

McGuire recorded four strikeouts in the loss on the mound, throwing a complete game and allowing 15 hits.

In the nightcap, Cobleskill posted a five run opening inning and didn't look back as they added to their lead over the remainder of the contest to collect the 10-2 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) win and earn the series sweep.

Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) threw the loss, striking out two in three innings, while allowing 10 hits, before being relieved by Brooke Terrier (Hubbardsville, N.Y.) for the final two. Terrier posted one strikeout and two earned runs.

Emily Vesely (Johnson City, N.Y.) put together a perfect hitting effort at the plate, recording three hits, including a double and an RBI. Newman once again recorded two hits, both singles, while recording an RBI.

Morrisville State put two up on the board in the bottom of the third as Leah Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) shot a single to right field and Amanda Labe (Friedensburg, Pa.) followed with another single to right. After Kennedy reached on an error, Newman poked a single to left field to score Gamlen, and Vesely followed with a single to center to score Labe.

That's as close as the Mustangs would get though, as the Cobleskill defense held of fa late rally in the bottom of the fifth.

Morrisville State returns to the field Sunday, traveling to Keuka College for the season finale.

Prior to the game, seniors Holly Gamlen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and McGuire were honored.
