Morrisville State opens up first day of spring training with losses to Lycoming, Keystone

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Morrisville State softball team opened up their 2019 season campaign on Monday, falling to Lycoming College 13-1 and Keystone College 9-1, both in five innings, at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

 

THE BASICS

Game 1:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • In the first game of the day, the Mustangs faced a hot start from the Lycoming Warriors, giving up three runs, two unearned, in the opening inning. Sophomore Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) posted the first hit of the game for Morrisville State on a single to left field in the bottom of the first, but the Mustangs were unable to advance the runner.
  • The Warriors posted two more runs in the top of the third before the Mustangs responded with a run of their own. Sophomore Ciera Sprague (Elmira, NY) started the rally with a single to first base, and was knocked in by freshman Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) on a double to center field on the ensuing play. Two batters later, Emily Vesely (Johnson City, NY) singled to center field, advancing Murphy to third base. Murphy tried to cut the Warrior lead, but was thrown out at home to end the inning.
  • Lycoming scored eight additional runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win for the Warriors.
  • Murphy recorded the loss for the Mustangs, pitching a total 3.2 innings and allowing nine runs, seven earned, while striking out two. Sophomore, Jessie Davis (Franklin, NY) relieved Murphy for the final 1.1 innings, allowing four earned runs.
  • The Mustangs recorded just three hits and one run versus Keystone College in their second contest of the afternoon. Sprague scored the lone Mustang run in the top of the fifth inning on Murphy's single to shortstop.
  • Kennedy suffered the loss for the Mustangs, pitching a total of 4.1 innings and allowing all nine runs, while striking out five batters.

Softball returns to action in Myrtle Beach, SC tomorrow, taking on Spalding University at 9:30am and Greenville University at 11:30am.
