Mustang softball swept on day two in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Morrisville State softball team combined for just four hits from the plate on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Spalding University 15-3, and Greenville University 18-0, both in five innings, on the second day of spring training at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

 

THE BASICS

Game 1:

  • Final Score: Spalding 15, Morrisville 3

  • Final Score: Greenville 18, Morrisville 0

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The Mustangs took the early lead in game one, posting one hit and one run in the top of the first inning. Lead-off hitter, Ciera Sprague (Elmira, NY) singled to third base to start the inning, before stealing both second and third base. Sprague went on to score on a Spalding error to take the 1-0 lead. Spalding responded in the bottom of the first, scoring five of their own runs, on four hits.
  • Morrisville collected two more runs in the second inning to cut the Eagles' lead. Freshman Sierra Grant (Fonda, NY) started off the inning with a walk, and advanced to third off a single to left field from Mackenzie Lawrence (Fonda, NY). Chelsea Smith (Madrid, NY) blasted a single to right field to score Grant, before Lawrence advanced to home on single to center field from Meleena Mortimer (Canandaigua, NY).
  • Spalding would go on to score eight more runs throughout the final three innings at bat. Sophomore, Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) threw the loss for the Mustangs, allowing ten earned runs and twelve hits while striking out one in 3.0 innings pitched.
  • The Mustangs posted just one hit in the second game of the afternoon versus Greenville University. In the bottom of the fourth inning, freshman Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) singled to center field, before advancing to second, but was left on base to end the inning.
  • Murphy collected two strike outs in the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 2.0 innings on the mound for Morrisville State. Sophomore Jessie Davis (Franklin, NY) relieved Murphy for the final three innings, allowing six earned runs and five hits.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Mustangs will return to action tomorrow at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, taking on Immaculata at 11:30am, followed by Mt. Aloysius at 3:30pm.
