Morrisville State drops pair on final day in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – On the final day of spring training in North Myrtle Beach, the Morrisville State College softball team dropped both contests, the first versus Iowa Wesleyan University by a score of 15-7, and the second to Clarks Summit University with a final score of 8-4.

 

THE BASICS

Game 1:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • After a scoreless first inning, following eight runs for the visitors in the second, the Mustangs came out with the bats going in the third inning, scoring five of their seven runs. Sophomore Ciera Sprague (Elmira, NY) got things started with a single bunt, and later stealing both second and third bases. Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) grounded out to the pitcher, but not before scoring Sprague to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard.
  • Both Paige Williams (Machias, NY) and Meleena Mortimer (Canandaigua, NY) posted doubles, and Emily Vesely (Johnson City, NY) hit her first triple of the season in the third inning, closing in on the visitor lead scoring five runs on six hits.
  • Morrisville punched in two more runs in the fourth inning, but were unable to overcome the Tiger lead. Freshman pitcher, Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) threw the loss for the Mustangs, pitching 4.2 total innings while allowing fifteen total runs, eleven unearned, and collecting a strikeout.
  • Morrisville challenged Clarks Summit in seven total innings in game two, collecting fifteen hits in 35 at-bats. Sprague, Vesely, Mackenzie Lawrence (Greene, NY), and Meleena Mortimer (Canandaigua, NY) all contributed three hits apiece for the Mustangs, with Mortimer and Vesely both slugging triples in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
  • Kennedy pitched all 7 innings on the mound for Morrisville, allowing eight runs, five earned, on fourteen hits, while collecting one strikeout on the afternoon.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Mustangs will host Nazareth College in their home opener this Saturday in a double header, pending field conditions. Games are slated to start at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
