Morrisville State falls to Elmira in doubleheader

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College softball team took the field for the first time since their spring training trip Tuesday afternoon, falling to host, Elmira College 4-3 in the opening game, and then 10-2 in six innings in the second game of the afternoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Morrisville State took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. The momentum started when lefty, Savannah Hobbie (South Kortright, NY) earned a walk, and then advanced to second base when Ciera Sprague (Elmira, NY) singled to third base. Chyne Kennedy (Southwold, Ontario) singled to left center field, knocking in a pair of runs for the Mustangs.
  • Kennedy continued the scoring drive in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single to left field, scoring Sprague. Morrisville was unable to capitalize with their next two batters, grounding out to third and second for the final two outs of the inning, leaving Kennedy on base.
  • The Soaring Eagles scored three unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth to ultimately earn the victory in game one. Hobbie reached to first on an error to start the seventh inning, and Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) reached on a fielder's choice, but the Mustangs fell short falling 4-3 to the host.
  • Kennedy led the Mustangs with three RBI's and two hits on three at-bats. On the mound, she pitched all six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five in the loss.
  • In the second of the day's action, Elmira capitalized on a strong presence at the plate in the first and fourth innings, scoring six of their ten runs. Morrisville scored two in the top of the third to even the score at 2-2 before Elmira's three-run inning in the fourth. Kennedy singled to left center, scoring Sprague, and later scored on an error by Elmira's second baseman.
  • Elmira put the game away in the bottom of the sixth on an inside the park grand slam from Elmira's Sam Chadbourne.
  • Murphy suffered the loss for the Mustangs, pitching 5.1 total innings, allowing ten runs on seven hits, and striking out one.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Mustangs will host Cazenovia College in their home opener this Saturday in a double header, pending field conditions. Games are slated to start at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
